Description
Christmas is a special time of year for both teachers and students! What a better way to celebrate the holiday season than with a festive CHRISTMAS STEM ACTIVITY?
What does the challenge consist of?
Step 1: Teach students about density with the included DENSITY PowerPoint lesson. I have included 2 versions- one for upper elementary students and one for middle-grade students. Each lesson includes a short video about density.
Step 2: Your students will be presented with a dilemma: Eli the Elf wants to make this Christmas REALLY special for Santa by making a special concoction of Santa’s favorite ingredients. He even wants to make the presentation extra special by layering the ingredients to create a red and green density column. Your students will use their knowledge of density to create this extra special concoction.
Step 3: Allow the students to collaborate and brainstorm, completing the included “planning guide” worksheet.
Step 4: Set the timer and watch your kids Go! Students will test their hypothesis by layering the ingredients. The students that are successful will have a beautiful green and red layered presentation for Santa; however, the students that are not successful will have a yucky brown presentation for Santa.
Step 5: Students will complete their planning guide by discussing their successes and weaknesses.
