An ecosystem scavenger hunt is a great way to get students outdoors! I have used this activity as an introduction to ecology and as a review before our ecology test. Either way, the students loved getting some fresh air while searching for different components of our school’s ecosystem.

We wrapped up our forensic pig autopsy this week with an epic pig funeral!

Each pathology group prepared a eulogy for their pig, decorated a casket, and gave a speech at the funeral. Our preacher, choir, and pallbearers did an amazing job paying respect to our little friends.

This is the highlight of the year for my forensics students as they were able to learn the role of a forensic pathologist, practice performing an autopsy, and determining COD.

To wrap up our death investigation unit, my forensics students will perform an autopsy on a fetal pig to determine …

✅cause of death
✅manner of death
✅mechanism of death

This week-long lab will end with the creation of a death certificate and a pig funeral (which is a sight to behold)!

One of the most successful strategies that I use i

One of the most successful strategies that I use in my classroom is progress monitoring. Since implementing it six years ago, I have seen tremendous improvements in student growth (from the beginning of the year to the end).

By focusing on progress (instead of a numerical test score), my students have learned to set personalized goals and work to achieve them.

They buy in to this “progress over perfection” mentality because they collect numerical data throughout the year that provides evidence for learning. They celebrate themselves and recognize that success isn’t found in a SCORE but rather in PROGRESSION.
