My forensics classes have started working on our annual Christmas crime scene project. They must create a crime scene centered around a holiday event. Each project must contain 10 pieces of evidence and a storyline.

I usually cover protein synthesis in January, but

I usually cover protein synthesis in January, but I’m ahead of schedule this year. I have a protein synthesis cookie lab that is always a hit, but today I put a holiday spin on it! 🎄

To model proteins synthesis, each student traveled into the nucleus (aka the hallway) to get a cookie recipe gene. 🧬

While in the hallway, they transcribed their recipe and then moved into the classroom (aka the ribosome) to translate their recipe into ingredients for their cookie (I provided them with a cookie codon chart for this).

I set up an assembly line of holiday toppings and candies and the students moved through the line to build their cookie. 🍪

This lab can be used anytime of the year because it’s completely editable! You could even change it up and have your students creat ornaments instead of cookies.

Oh Christmas Tree! Oh Christmas Tree! 🌲

Today, I had my Forensics students make fingerprint ornaments for our classroom Christmas tree. I purchased a set of colorful fingerprint craft pads from Amazon about 5 years ago and they still work great.

A few little forensics touches made this tree complete. I LOVE this time of year!

We kicked off our genetics unit today with a strawberry 🍓 DNA extraction lab.

The students were intrigued by the DNA! 🧬

Have your students put their fingerprint on a balloon using an ink pad (or marker).

When they inflate the balloon, the minutiae patterns will be enlarged and are easily identified.

This is much easier for students when they are first learning to identify minutiae patterns.

This week, we’ve been covering cellular respirat

This week, we’ve been covering cellular respiration in my Biology classes. After teaching about alcoholic fermentation, we did the BARF BAG lab. 🤮

This lab was a fun way to observe the production of CO2 during fermentation. My students also had to write a CER to explain the relationship between sugar content and CO2 production.

⭐️ Big Kids Teaching Little Kids Science ⭐️

I took my high school Forensics students to our local elementary school to perform 👻 Halloween Science experiments for the kindergarten classes.

It was the BEST day of the year!

The BIG kids had fun and the LITTLE kids loved it.
