Description

Are your biology students struggling to understand the concept of genetic drift? In this Genetic Drift Simulation Activity students will use colored craft beads and a dice to model how random events can affect small populations to become a mechanism for evolution.

This activity is low-prep (can be set up in just a few minutes) and is the perfect hands-on, visual representation of genetic drift.

Materials Needed for this Activity:

  • 6-sided dice (1 for each lab group)
  • colored craft beads (1 small package per lab group)

Items Included in this Resource Download:

  • Student Lab Sheet (editable)
  • Simulation Table (print one per lab group)
  • Answer Key and Video Guide (can be assigned for absent students)

For my lower-level Bio classes, I use this as a teacher-directed activity. I use my document camera to model the steps as the students complete their student answer document. Then, we walk through the analysis questions together.

For my higher level classes, I assign this simulation as a student-directed lab activity.

However you decide to use this activity, your students will find it both informative and engaging.
